Starting Point (Eakins Oval — Art Museum Area)
The Walk Against Hunger begins at the Eakins Oval near the base
of the stairs to the main entrance of Philadelphia Museum of Art.
It is a 6-mile course that takes you along Martin Luther King
Drive where you can enjoy the flowering trees along the Schuylkill River and Boat House Row. Most people will complete the course in 2½ hours. Martin Luther King Drive will be closed to auto traffic, so you can safely walk in the roadway. We do offer a shuttle bus
pick-up from Parking Lot 3 at the 3-mile point, but the wait can
be long. Some walkers might want to consider the One-Mile Stroll
as an alternative.
- Take I-95 North. Exit onto I-676 West. Follow directions from
I-676 West (see below).
- Take I-676 W to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway exit (22nd Street, Museum area), on the right side. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto 22nd Street. Immediately move to your left lane. Turn left onto the Benjamin Franklin Parkway (very wide street). Eakins Oval will be in front of you, just in front of the Art Museum. See available parking below.
- Take I-76 East to Philadelphia. Exit at right onto Spring Garden
Street. At end of exit ramp turn left. Continue through the first traffic light, and Eakins Oval will be on your left. If you bear right from the circle onto the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, there is free parking available in the metered spaces on the Parkway (see below).
SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) buses Nos. 7, 32, 38, 43, and 48 serve the Museum area. Call SEPTA at 215-580-7800 for more information. Regional rail travelers can walk from Suburban Station at 16th and JFK Boulevard.
The PATCO Speedline – 856-772-6900 is an easy way to travel between southern New Jersey and Center City, with trains running approximately every 20 minutes on weekends.
On the morning of the Walk, meters for on-street parking spaces are free for the following areas from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm:
- On the Benjamin Franklin Parkway from 18th Street (at the Cathedral) to 23rd Street.
- On Pennsylvania Avenue from 22nd Street to 26th Street. Pennsylvania Avenue runs parallel to the Parkway along the tall apartment building by the Art Museum.
You can also park your car and pay a flat fee of $5 to park on the Upper Terrace of the Art Museum. Enter this area from Kelly Drive by turning toward the Museum onto Museum Drive. Also, on the north side of the Museum, just off Sedgley Drive, you can park in the Azalea Garden. To reach this area, turn left at the light onto Waterworks Drive from Kelly Drive, heading toward the river. The fee there is $7.
If you have a handicap permit for your car, you may park in one of the handicap parking spaces on the Upper Terrace (Schuylkill River side of the Museum.)
The area of Eakins Oval (see below) that leads into the parking lot will be blocked off by police. Vans and buses carrying walkers can pull into the blocked-off area to drop off passengers safely in the parking lot.
